Description:
Susan Lake is located in northern Charlevoix County, approximately 4 miles from downtown Charlevoix. It is shallow, narrow, and supports a healthy fish community, including northern pike and pan fish. Susan Creek flows out the northern end, traversing 2 miles through Little Traverse Conservancy and other protected lands before emptying into Lake Michigan.
Known Aquatic Invasive Species:
Phragmites, or common reed, has been documented on Susan Lake, however it is the native variety.
Monitoring and Research:
Susan Lake is monitored every three years through the Watershed Council’s Comprehensive Water Quality Monitoring (CWQM) Program for dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity, pH, nitrate-nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chloride levels.
Susan Lake is NOT currently monitored through the Watershed Council’s Volunteer Lake Monitoring (VLM) Program. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact the Watershed Council at 231-347-1181. It was monitored from 1993-2002.
Susan Lake is also monitored through the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Surface Water Quality Protection Program (SWQPP).
